Kenneth Clarkson
Founder & Lead Mathematics Tutor
The strongest maths students at New Zealand's leading schools — from Kristin and ACG to Diocesan — rarely get there by accident. The foundation is laid in Years 9 and 10. I taught IB maths at Kristin School, and students I've taught have gone on to leading universities in New Zealand and overseas — including Imperial, Columbia and Chicago. That path starts long before the exam years — and this is where it starts.
A strong Year 10 opens every pathway
Years 9 and 10 aren't tied to any one senior course — they're the shared foundation under all of them. Get them right, and your child can walk into whichever pathway their school offers from a position of strength.
The number sense and algebra built now is exactly what NCEA Level 1 assumes from day one. A strong Year 10 makes Merit and Excellence the natural target, not a stretch.
IGCSE takes Year 9–10 algebra and problem-solving as given. Get those solid and the step up into the Cambridge pathway is smooth rather than steep.
The Diploma's Analysis and Applications courses reward deep, connected understanding — the kind that's built in the junior years, long before the Diploma begins.
The quiet years that decide the loud ones
Years 9 and 10 rarely feel high-stakes at the time. That's exactly why they're the years where focused help makes the biggest long-term difference.
Where the gap quietly opens
Years 9 and 10 are where maths can silently get away from a student — negative numbers, fractions, the first real algebra. Nothing's formally graded yet, so it's easy to miss… until Level 1, when it all matters at once. We find and close those gaps while there's still plenty of time.
Get ahead, not just keep up
For a capable student these are the runway years. We stretch beyond the classroom — richer problem-solving, an early feel for senior ideas, and the thinking habits that top NCEA, Cambridge and IB results (and strong university applications) are built on.
Confidence while the stakes are low
With no credits on the line yet, Years 9 and 10 are the ideal, low-pressure time to rebuild confidence and a genuine liking for maths. Students arrive at the senior years believing they're 'a maths person' — and that changes everything that follows.
How it works
Simple, low-pressure, and built around your child.
Check you're set up
Lessons need a laptop, a tablet and stylus, and a reliable internet connection — so your child can handwrite maths naturally, right alongside me.
Get in touch
Tell me about your child through the Get Started form. Your first lesson is risk-free — if it's not the right fit, there's no charge.
A plan, then weekly lessons
I find their current level and set a plan, then we meet weekly online on an interactive whiteboard — with homework each lesson to lock it in.
Ongoing progress
Lessons run weekly through the term. You stay in the loop on how they're tracking, and we adapt as their confidence grows.

Kenneth Clarkson
My goal isn't just to get your child through the next test — it's to build strong foundations that set them up for the long term. I teach for understanding over memorising, keep lessons calm and encouraging, and tailor each student's path toward wherever they're heading, whether that's NCEA, Cambridge, IB, or beyond.
Sarah J.
I love helping students build genuine confidence with maths — breaking big ideas into clear, manageable steps until they click. I keep lessons supportive, patient, and focused on real understanding.
What families say
“We really appreciate the positive impact Kenneth has had on our son. Michael often tells us how much he enjoys Kenneth's lessons, and they've made a real difference to his confidence and understanding in maths. Thank you, Kenneth, for being such a wonderful teacher.”
